Philip Turner was an outstanding mechanical engineer who designed a wide range of innovative devices. He made major formative contributions to the design of geotechnical centrifuges for the Schofield Centre. He was a design engineer in the Department of Engineering for many years and when he died he bequeathed in his will a prize to be awarded annually for "outstanding work in geotechnical centrifuge testing conducted by a research student working at the Schofield Centre in Cambridge".
We were delighted to have Mrs Frances Turner, Philip's widow, with us on 5 October to present the prize to Charles.
