Ziyad Abunada of the Geotechnical & Environmental Research Group was the recipient of the best paper award at the First Arab Innovation Network Annual Conference (AINAC 2012) on the theme of Environment. The conference was organised by a group of Arab researchers from the University of Cambridge (UK) working on an innovation focused initiative to promote an active Arab Innovation Network in Abu Dhabi- UAE. The conference provided a venue for innovators from all over the Arab countries to inspire innovation on a multi-disciplinary level. More than 70 papers with 38 teams in the fields of Environment, Information Technology, Public Health, Communications and Internship competed in AINAC 2012.
Ziyad's PhD study forms part of an extensive research programme led by Dr Abir Al-Tabbaa into the remediation of contaminated land. The topic of Ziyad's PhD study is the long term remediation and monitoring of groundwater through permeable reactive barrier (PRB) systems. His work is linked to a large government funded project called SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology) where PRB field trials were conducted to remediate contaminated groundwater and his work includes monitoring the field performance.
