Turner Prize 2021

Philip Turner was an outstanding mechanical engineer, who designed a wide range of innovative devices. He made major formative contributions to the design of geotechnical centrifuges for the Schofield Centre. He was a design engineer in the Department of Engineering for many years and when he died he bequeathed in his will a prize to be awarded annually for "outstanding work in geotechnical centrifuge testing conducted by a research student working at the Schofield Centre in Cambridge".

This year, for the first time in the history of this prize, it was awarded jointly to two of our PhD Research Students - Casey Shepheard and Ahmed Alagha - for their truly innovative research and development of the miniature TBM to be used in the geotechnical centrifuge.

Professor Gopal Madabhushi, Director of Schofield Centrifuge Centre and Head of Geotechnical and Environmental Group, presented the prize to Casey and Ahmed on Friday 8 October 2021.
