In-situ detection of contaminants in soils
(Amanda Treadaway 2001: photometric sensors for contaminant transport studies)
This research into the prediction of pollution migration in soils is using an in-situ fibre-optic photometric sensor to track the plume of pollutants.
Fibre-optic photometric sensor
Plumes of dye moving through sand. Insignificant interaction with soil.
Fibre-optic pH sensor
Plume of sodium hydroxide moving through sand. Significant interaction with soil.
Treadaway also used sensors to detect the transport of dye through a clay landfill liner in a centrifuge-mounted simulation (2001).
