Ermao graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009 with Bachelor degree (with Honours) in Civil and Structural Engineering. In October 2010 he joined the Geotechnical Research Group at University of Cambridge as a PhD student, immediately after having completed his Master degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London, UK (2009-2010). He is affiliated to Churchill College. His study is supervised by Professor Kenichi Soga.

PhD topic: Numerical Analysis of methane hydrate in wellbore design
The main objective of the research topic is to develop a wellbore design methodology that allows safe wellbore construction and gas production. A staged-finite-element model is developed to investigate the deformation and stability of a wellbore and the surrounding sediments during the wellbore construction and gas production process.
This research is funded by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).
